Bus accident claims 23 lives in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW - At least 23 members of a marriage party were killed, when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a river in Madhav Garh in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district early on Wednesday morning.

Jalaun Superintendent of Police (SP) Prem Gautam said that 22 bodies have been recovered, while efforts are on to trace the body of one missing person.

Local villagers rescued around 40 people, who were traveling in the bus that was overloaded with 63 people.

Some of the rescued passengers, who sustained minor injuries, have been admitted to the nearby hospital.

Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Law and Order Brijlal said that the deceased included five children and the rest were male members of the marriage party.

The father of the bridegroom also died in the accident, said Brijlal.

Postmortem of all the bodies are being conducted at Madhav Garh government hospital, he added.he accident took place on a bridge dividing Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh by a riverlet around 124 kilometers from Lucknow, when the driver lost control over the vehicle in an attempt to over speed.
