Ivory Coast president dissolves ‘unity’ government

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — The president of Ivory Coast declared in a statement on state TV that he is dissolving the government and election commission.

The move throws into doubt the political reconciliation process in the divided country that had former rebels serving in top ministerial posts.

In the recorded message broadcast on national television, President Laurent Gbagbo said “the government is dissolved.”

But he specified that former rebel leader Guillaume Soro who was prime minister of the unity government will stay on to help form a new government.

Ivory Coast was once Africa’s economic star but fell into disarray after a brief civil war which divided the country into a rebel-held north and a government-controlled south.
