Falling boulder wreaks havoc in Rockville, Utah
ROCKVILLE, Utah — The tiny southwestern Utah town of Rockville lived up to its name when a 30-foot boulder broke free from a mountainside there, slammed into another boulder and shattered, sending giant chunks of rock plowing into sheds, cars, a home and a chicken coop.
No one was hurt.
Tyler Knudsen of the Utah Geological Survey says the boulder broke away Wednesday after several days of rain.
It rolled through a shallow ravine, smashed into a partially buried boulder and shattered into several pieces.
The debris destroyed several sheds and a chicken coop and damaged two cars. One 4-foot hunk went through the entryway of a home and put a hole in the wall.
Geologists worry that another similar-sized boulder might also soon come crashing down. They say it’s sitting precariously on a 45-degree slope and is threatening several buildings below.
