Historic Polaroid collection to be sold

NEW YORK — More than 1,200 photographs from Polaroid’s historic collection, by some of the 20th century’s most celebrated artists, will be auctioned in New York City this summer.

They are estimated to bring $7.5 million to $11.5 million at Sotheby’s on June 21-22.

About 70 percent of the images are Polaroid prints.

Included are some 400 Polaroid and non-Polaroid prints by Ansel Adams. There are also images by David Hockney, Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, and Dorothea Lange.

The collection was started by Polaroid founder Edwin Land. It was supplemented with the traditional images with the help of his friend Adams.

A bankruptcy court in Minnesota is forcing Polaroid to sell the collection to pay off creditors.
