RailAmerica: Jan. freight carloads rose 4.6 pct
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — RailAmerica Inc. said on Wednesday that its January freight carloads rose 4.6 percent to 67,444 from a year earlier.
The results don’t include its discontinued Ottawa Valley Railway operation.
RailAmerica said shipments rose in seven out of 12 commodity groups. Much of the increase was due to shipments of agricultural products, chemicals, and ores and metals.
It said the soft construction market hurt shipments of wood and minerals, and coal shipments fell in the central U.S.
RailAmerica, owned by Fortress Investment Group LLC, runs 40 individual railroads with about 7,400 miles of track in 27 states and three Canadian provinces.
Its shares rose 14 cents to close at $11.55 on Wednesday.
