WEST MIDNAPORE - A huge cache of arms and ammunition from a Maoist hideout was seized from the Ajnasuli region of West Bengal’s West Midnapore district on Monday.

Acting on a tip off the police patrol team raided Ajnasuli area and recovered material used in making explosives.

The material included drill machine, pipes, gun powder, sulphur and large quantity of splinters which are used for landmines, said, Manoj Verma, Superintendent of Police, West Midnapore.

The Maoist violence-estimated to have caused 600 to 700 deaths annually and displaced 100,000 civilians-has spread to over 180 of India’s 602 districts and has been declared as the country’s single biggest internal security threat.

Maoists claim they are fighting for the rights of poor farmers and landless labourers, but are fast losing credibility after attacking schools, hospitals and infrastructure projects. (ANI)
