Police: Boy found dead in luxury Manhattan hotel

NEW YORK — New York City police say an 8-year-old boy was found dead and his socialite mother near death in a room at a luxury Manhattan hotel.

Police said they’re investigating the death at the five-star Peninsula Hotel just off Fifth Avenue as a possible murder and attempted suicide. They say prescription drugs may have been involved.

A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that a suicide note was found at the scene. The official wasn’t authorized to publicly disclose details of the probe and insisted on anonymity.

Police say the 49-year-old woman’s relatives told police Friday they feared the child was in danger. Police first went to her Central Park apartment building and then to the hotel.

Police say the woman is in stable condition.

(This version CORRECTS the boy’s age to 8 instead of 9.)
