DOJ opinion due on Google’s digital book agreement

NEW YORK — The U.S. Department of Justice is weighing in on a revised legal settlement that would give Google the digital rights to millions of books.

The opinion, due to be filed Thursday in New York, comes nearly five months after the Justice Department balked at the original agreement between Google Inc. and groups representing U.S. authors and publishers.

Google and the other parties modified some provisions to address the Justice Department’s concerns that the deal could drive up book prices and violate copyright laws.

U.S. District Judge Denny Chin has scheduled a Feb. 18 hearing to consider whether the class-action settlement should be approved.
