NAGPUR - South African captain Graeme Smith has said the number one ranking is not really an issue for his team.

“We know India are the number one team in the world. We would focus on our game, and, if we perform to our potential and play as per our standards, we would be able to put India under a lot of pressure,” Smith told a news conference here “Playing in India is always tough. We start as underdogs and India are favourites in this series. We know we have got to play good cricket but we are confident of our own abilities, he added.

Smith felt the Indian spin attack could create problems for his side despite its robust batting line-up.

“Our batsman are equipped, we have done well in the subcontinent, but quality spin bowlers in Indian team …it is going to be a challenge,” said Smith.

“Our recent record in the sub-continent is pretty good. We won in Pakistan, in Bangladesh and we came very close to winning a series here in India. It’s a pleasure to play here, and, at the same time, it is a challenge, Smith said.

The South African squad arrived in India on Sunday to play two Tests and three one-day internationals. (ANI)
