Vietnam War-era shell explodes at school
HANOI, Vietnam — Officials say a Vietnam War-era artillery shell has exploded in a school yard, shattering windows and terrifying hundreds of students.
Principal Ho Dac Thiet says the explosion occurred Wednesday at the Nguyen Hue junior high school in the central province of Quang Tri.
He says no students were hurt in the blast, which could be heard three miles (five kilometers) away.
The buried shell apparently detonated when workers burned a tree stump to clear space in the school yard.
Unexploded ordnance and mines have killed more than 42,000 people and wounded some 62,000 since the Vietnam War ended in 1975.
