TVA chief: ‘tremendous progress’ in ash cleanup

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority’s chief executive says the utility has made tremendous progress in cleaning up the December 2008 spill of coal ash at Kingston.

Tom Kilgore told a civic club Thursday in Chattanooga that the spill, which is expected to cost more than $1 billion to clean up, has been “an embarrassment for us.”

He said TVA’s rates were 15 percent lower for the average residential customer in December than the median rate of 23 surrounding utilities.
