UNESCO’s Pak centre likely to be shut down to curtail expenditure

ISLAMABAD - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) Pakistan cluster is likely to be shut down, sources have revealed.
According to sources privy to the issue, an important meeting of Executive Committee and Country Directors of UNESCO’s Asia Pacific region is to be held on 29th January, in which the final decision in this regard would be taken.
A summary pertaining to the partial closure of UNESCO to curtail its unabated expenditures would be discussed in the meeting, The Nation reports.
Sources said that a proposal has been under discussion to bring the administrative and financial control of UNESCO Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Korea and some other countries either to India or Iran.
It may be noted that the Pakistan government is at present providing 1.2 million rupees to UNESCO per month, compared to the lucrative financial packages from one million to 1.4 million rupees which senior UNESCO officials are entitled to. (ANI)
