DR offers safe passege to ousted Honduran leader
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Dominican officials say a deal has been reached with Honduras’ president-elect granting Manuel Zelaya safe passage to the Caribbean nation.
Presidential spokesman Rafael Nunez says the agreement would let the ousted Honduran leader go to the Dominican Republic after Honduran President-elect Porfirio Lobo takes office on Jan. 27.
The agreement was signed Wednesday by Lobo and Dominican President Leonel Fernandez.
Zelaya was toppled in a June 28 military-backed coup and flown into exile. But he later sneaked back into Honduras and holed up in the Brazilian embassy.
Nunez said that Zelaya would travel to the Dominican Republic together with Fernandez as a guest of the Caribbean nation.
