LUCKNOW - The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was leading a protest in Lucknow here against price rise.

The police also baton charged the Samajwadi supporters, who had turned up in large numbers to accompany their chief.

On Monday, Yadav had declared that he would hold a massive ‘Jan Andolan’ in the State to highlight the failure of the Centre and the State government in checking rising prices of essential commodities, corruption and police atrocities.

Yadav said on Monday that all sections of people were reeling under the impact of price rise, with pulses selling at Rs. 90-Rs.100 a kg and sugar Rs. 50. Both the Centre and State governments were responsible for the price rise, but they were blaming each other.

On the Centre blaming the Uttar Pradesh government for the price rise, Yadav had said that if the State was responsible for the price rise, the Centre should take action against it.

Yadav observed on Monday that only poor people with empty stomachs were dying in the cold wave. He alleged that Chief Minister Mayawati and BSP leaders were involved in corruption and that party workers were involved in criminal activities. (ANI)
