Plane marking Hudson flight has forced NYC landing
NEW YORK — A small plane flying a banner marking the one-year anniversary of the emergency landing on the Hudson River off New York City has made an emergency landing itself at a nearby landfill.
Police said Friday that the pilot is out of the aircraft and is safe. The two-seater had no other passengers onboard.
The plane landed at 12:35 p.m. at the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island after experiencing engine trouble. Police say it came from New Jersey and was flying a banner in honor of US Airways Flight 1549.
The landfill is closed and holds wreckage from the Sept. 11 attack. The landing did not disturb any of the debris.
