AP Source: GM skeptical of expected bid for Saab
DETROIT — A person briefed on the matter says Dutch automaker Spyker Cars is expected to submit a last-minute bid soon to buy Saab from General Motors Co.
But the person says that GM officials are proceeding with plans to phase out the Swedish car brand because they question whether Spyker has the expertise to make Saab work.
A spokesman for Spyker would not comment but says a statement would come soon.
GM interim CEO Ed Whitacre Jr. said Wednesday he was not optimistic about selling Saab. He said that GM would begin closing factories later this week.
The person briefed on the dealings says that GM would weigh bids from Spyker and possibly one other suitor.
The person asked not to be identified because the negotiations are private.
