Clarification: Smithsonian-Apollo Theater story
WASHINGTON — In a story April 20 about an Apollo Theater exhibit at the National Museum of American History, The Associated Press reported that black performers could speak directly to white audiences at the Harlem theater, according to curator Tuliza Fleming.
Fleming now says she was speaking specifically of black comedians who spoke directly to the New York theater’s integrated audiences at a time when that was taboo at other primarily white venues.
