Seattle chosen to lead LED street light study

SEATTLE — The U.S. Department of Energy says Seattle will lead an effort to promote street lights that use energy efficient light emitting diodes, or LEDs.

The DOE said Monday that Seattle was chosen to lead a national consortium of cities that will study the best ways to use the lights and what equipment to buy. The federal agency is providing $200,000 for the program.

Seattle City Light plans to install 5,000 LED street lights this year and 40,000 during the next five years.
