Mohini’s murder prompts Wednesday safety review of Kiwi taxi industry

AUCKLAND - New Zealand’s taxi industry will this week find out whether cameras, shields, flak jackets, among other options become compulsory following a safety review prompted by the murder of Indian-origin taxi driver Hiren Mohini in Auckland.
New Zealand Transport Minister Steven Joyce will present his report to an industry reference group on Wednesday.
The Transport Ministry and the New Zealand Transport Agency have been working on the review following the death of Mohini, who was fatally stabbed by a passenger on January 31, Stuff.co.nz reports.
The violence against taxi drivers has continued, with a Tauranga taxi driver being bashed and robbed last weekend, leaving the 55-year-old man with serious head and facial injuries.
New Zealand Taxi Federation executive director Tim Reddish said taxi company representatives from throughout the country would attend the meeting.
Reddish said he had his fingers crossed Joyce would make cameras in cars compulsory. (ANI)
