Design for D.C. Eisenhower Memorial to be unveiled
WASHINGTON — The design for a national memorial to former president and World War II general Dwight D. Eisenhower is set to be unveiled in Washington.
The memorial commission will present the design by leading architect Frank O. Gehry on Thursday.
The Eisenhower Memorial is planned for a four-acre site at the base of Capitol Hill.
The commission says the 34th president deserves a memorial in the nation’s capital for a record that included expanding civil rights and Social Security, establishing America’s defense strategy for the Cold War and launching the interstate highway system.
The Republican president served two terms from 1953 to 1961. He died in 1969.
