Luftwaffe war board game aimed at defending Fatherland up for auction in England

LONDON - Adler Luftverteidigungs Spiel, a board game designed by the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) in the 1940s, is up for sale at an auction house in Sussex, England.

The game is played with little wooden planes attacking territory defended by barrage balloons and anti-aircraft batteries, and the instructions for the game claim it was “developed by an officer of the Luftwaffe with the aim of the defence of our airspace.”

It added: “It’s more profound reason is to be prepared for an attack on the Fatherland.”

The game was designed to mirror events in the real world where British children were taking cover in bomb shelters while the Battle of Britain raged above their heads.

It was recommended for players aged 12 or over who rolled a specially designed die and moved the wooden fighters and bombers around the board.

Each side has six bombers and six fighter escorts making a total of 24 planes. The objective is to attack airfields, barracks, gas and electricity works, iron works and radio stations.oy Butler, from Wallis and Wallis auction house in Lewes, East Sussex, said: “I have never seen one of these before. It came in a box that is about A4 size and there is a picture on the front of a British plane being shot down.”The board is designed to appear as if you are looking down on top of an aerial photo, although it is a fictional town. It is a very interesting item from the war,” The Times quoted Butler, as saying.

The game is estimated to sell for up to 100 pounds when it is sold on February 16. (ANI)
