LONDON - Supermarket giant Tesco has banned people wearing pyjamas from shopping after customers complained that undressed consumers made them uncomfortable.

Signs warning the customers of the new rules have already been installed at the St Mellons store in Cardiff, South Wales.

The new signs, headed Tesco Dress Code Policy, read: “To avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others, we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted).”

Also, a spokeswoman for Tesco spoke on the issue.

“We’re not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are of course more than welcome,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She added: “We do, however, request that customers do not shop in their PJs or nightgowns. This is to avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others.

“This is in response to other customers. We would never dictate to people. But we have listened to customer feedback that it makes them uncomfortable and embarrassed.”

However, some customers are unhappy with the new order.

Elaine Carmody, who was one of the first to fall foul of the new rules, said: “He said it offends people. But I’ve never seen anyone offended. I just don’t understand it. I go in other shops in my pyjamas and they don’t say anything.

“You used to always be allowed in Tesco. But not now - it is ridiculous and stupid.

“I’ve got lovely pairs of pyjamas, with bears and penguins on them. I’ve worn my best ones today, just so I look tidy.” (ANI)
