Spanish-language newspaper to launch next month

SALT LAKE CITY — Deseret Management Corp. is launching a new Spanish-language newspaper in Utah.

El Observador is scheduled to begin publication Feb. 9. It will run Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends.

The weekday editions will focus on hard news, and the weekend editions will include more features and family-oriented content.

Deseret News Publisher Jim Wall says El Observador’s initial circulation will be 10,000 home deliveries weekly, with another 15,000 copies distributed on racks and by hand delivery.

Wall says Utah’s rapidly growing Hispanic and Latino community is important but underrepresented.

The publication’s editor, Patricia Quijano Dark, says the paper will provide news that’s important to everyone, not just Hispanics, except that it will happen to be in Spanish.
