Australians could soon taste the sweet Indian mango

NEW DELHI - Australians are looking forward to eating Indian mangoes from next season, even as the governments of the two nations are fine tuning the modalities for the export of the fruit.

Because of its sweetness, Indian mangoes are in high demand across the world. Access to Indian mangoes is a long pending demand of Australia.

India currently has a trade imbalance with Australia, and in this context, the recent visit to Australia by External Affair Minister S. M. Krishna, assumes significance.

Though Australia had given its nod for the import of Indian mangoes in 2008, the export of the fruit Down Under is yet to take off.

Indian-Australian bilateral trade in goods and services rose to Australian dollars 22.40 billion in 2009-10, from Australian dollars 6.54 billion in 2003-04.

According to the available information, India’s total exports of goods and services to Australia was in the range of USD 2.17 billion, while India imports from Australia was pegged at USD 1.59 billion.

India’s main service exports to Australia are computer and information survives and tourism and Australian service exports to India are education, tourism and education related travel. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
