Security beefed up in Kolkata ahead of Republic Day

KOLKATA - There is no specific threat to Kolkata ahead of the 62nd Republic Day celebrations Jan 26 but security in the city has been beefed up, a police officer said Monday.

In the city, security has been beefed up. All the 21 entry and exist points of the city will be kept under strict vigilance to prevent entry of the outsiders from Tuesday, said Kolkata Polices Joint Commissioner (Headquarters) Jawed Shamim.

There is no specific threat perception for the city during the Republic Day, but every possible step has been taken to beef up the security, he said.

City hotels, guest houses and other lodging centres would be checked to ensure that no outsiders without proper documents take shelter in the run-up to the Republic Day, said Shamim.

Additional police personnel will be posted at all important public places like - railway stations, car parking lots, bus terminuses and shopping malls,” he said.
