Manipur residents condemn murder of senior education official

IMPHAL - Manipur residents have condemned the recent murder of education official by unidentified militants.
Dr. Naorem Kunjabihari Singh, Chairman of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur was found dead inside his office at Babupara, a high security zone, on January 12.
Police suspect that he was shot dead by militants are looking for a motive behind the killing.
Singh was promoted as chairman nearly three months ago. He also served as the secretary of council of Higher Secondary Education for five years.
His wife, Memtombi Devi, asked: “I want to know why he was murdered and what mistake did he make? I want those who killed him to be arrested.”
Manipur’s Education Minister, L. Jayentakumar Singh, said: “The incident is shocking and is a threat to everybody. So, the Government of Manipur has already begun investigating the case. We are very optimistic that we’ll find out soon who the culprits are.”
Angry residents of Kakwa Naorem Leikai and other nearby areas formed a joint action committee and ransacked the office of the state education board and imposed a 48-hour economic blockade on the Leikai section of Nationak Highway 39 that runs between Imphal and Moreh.
The committee also presented a memorandum to Manipur Chief Minister I. Ibobi Singh demanding that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a detailed investigation.
They also demanded that every facility be provided to the family members of the deceased and that the culprits be arrested as soon as possible.emmo, an employee of the Board of Secondary Education of Manipur, said: “Through this protest we want to express our anger over the killing of our chairman. The incident has scared us and made us feel insecure.”
A. Angouba Singh, the general secretary of the BSEM Employees Union, said: “When he (Singh) joined office, he brought about changes in the education system. His death has upset us. On behalf of the BSEM, I request the authorities to provide proper information to his family and staff regarding the reason for his killing.” (ANI)
