NEW DELHI - The Delhi Metro began 2011 with a safety awareness week Saturday.
“We will observe a ’safety awareness week’ for elevators and escalators Jan 1-7, when commuters will be guided to have a safe ride while using escalators and elevators at the Metro stations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said in a statement.
Currently there are 368 elevators and 432 escalators installed at Delhi Metro stations.
Station staff along with 80 volunteers of Scouts and Guides will be deputed at the stations and informative material will be distributed to the commuters during the week, the company statement said.
Commuters welcomed the decision.
Metro is for people from all walks of life. To see such awareness campaigns happening is great and helpful also, said Raahat Shakil, a student of Delhi University.
The Delhi Metro ferries over 20 lakh commuters every day on its 185-km network spanning 135 stations.
