NEW DELHI - The government Tuesday announced the appointment of S.K. Tripathi as the chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the country’s external intelligence agency.

Sanjeev Tripathi, who headed RAW’s air wing, the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), will take charge Thursday for two years.

“The appointments committee of the cabinet has approved K.C. Verma, secretary of RAW, Cabinet Secretariat, to superannuate Dec 30 and has approved the appointment of Tripathi as Secretary of RAW,” said the statement by the ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions.

Tripathi will be the first RAW chief from the RAS (RAW Allied Services) cadre in its more than four-decade history.

Originally from the Uttar Pradesh cadre of the 1973 batch of the Indian Police Service, Tripathi was later absorbed in RAW.

He is the son-in-law of G.S. Bajpai, who headed RAW in 1991-92.

The decision to appoint Tripathi was taken after a sudden twist in the succession drama at RAW when incumbent Verma decided to quit a month ahead of his tenure ending Jan 31, 2011.

Verma is understood to have recommended Tripathis name for the top post.
