NEW DELHI - Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in which he has expressed serious concern about the law and order situation in the state.

According to reports, Chidambaram has asked the West Bengal Government to ensure that the armed cadres belonging to ‘Harmad Vahini’ are immediately disarmed and demobilised.

“If these armed cadres continue to take upon themselves the duties of maintaining law and order, I wonder what is the role of security forces, specially central para military forces which have been deployed at the request of the state government,” said Chidambaram in his letter.

The Home Minister’s letter came a day after a delegation of Trinamool leaders met the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi and expressed their concern over rising food prices and violence in West Bengal. (ANI)
