Cake prices skyrocket in Kolkata ahead of Christmas

KOLKATA - Ahead of the Christmas celebrations on Saturday, the prices of cakes have increase in Kolkata following a sharp rise in the cost of its ingredients.

“I am here to get the cake for Christmas celebration but the prices of cakes are very high as compared to last year. And for common people like us it has become very difficult to celebrate. The rates for all types of cakes have increased,” said Twinkl M.Wip, a customer.

Idris Ali, the Joint Action Committee of Bakers Association secretary, said the prices of flour, vegetables and other ingredients, which are used to prepare cakes, have been increased. So, they were forced to increase its price.

“It depends upon the quality of the cake. Keeping quality in mind the rate of the cakes has increased by ten, twenty and fifty percent. We gave an application to central and state governments and requested that everybody uses cake on Christmas so the government should give us ingredients, which are used to prepare cakes on limited rates, but government is careless. So, that’s why we are helpless, so we have increased the rates,” he said.

Christmas will be celebrated across the world on Saturday. (ANI)
