SYDNEY - An Indian-origin man has been accused of sexually assaulting a sleeping Australian teenage girl at a railway station in Sydney.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Avineshwar Nand has been accused of having sexual intercourse with an 18-year-old female without her consent.
The incident is alleged to have happened on a bench at Newtown railway station between 4.30am and 5.30am on Thursday.
Nand was formally refused bail on Friday after he failed to appear before Newtown Local Court.
The 38-year-old is now scheduled to appear before Central Local Court on February 14.
Newtown police inspector Paul Kelly said that police distributed pamplets at the station on Friday to try and encourage witnesses to come forward.
Police are hoping to talk to anyone who was there, either on the platform or in a train, at the time of the attack.
“It’s evident from the CCTV footage that there were a number of people there, there were trains pulling in and out. Whether they thought it was a consensual act, we don’t know,” Kelly said.
According to reports, Nand was on parole for other offences. (ANI)
