STORY: Indian Army officials paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 India-Pakistan war to celebrate ‘Victory Day’ on Wednesday (December 15).
‘Vijay Diwas’ or ‘Victory Day’ is celebrated every year on December 16 that marks India’s decisive military victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, the third engagement between the two neighbours, which led to the creation of Bangladesh as a nation.
Thousands of spectators were present to see the enthralling performance of the army personnel in Mathura city.
Sushil Gupta, a retired Lieutenant General, who came to pay tribute to the martyrs, said that this is an opportunity to renew our ties with the new soldiers.
“We try that the old soldiers get a chance to meet the new ones on this occasion and to encourage them and remind them of their sacrifice made for the country,” said Gupta.
He added that they had to face many problems before they sensed victory over the enemy.
“See, we had to face a lot of problems due to the terrain of Basantar. There were lots of rivers and mines around the region but keeping all this in mind, one core thing brought India great victory,” Gupta added.
The widows of the martyrs who laid their lives in the 1971 war were also honoured at the event.
During the occasion, Army soldiers showed various kinds of performance like sky diving, hot air balloon display, and motorcycle riding among others.
