LHASA - Tibet is in the final phase of completing its first expressway, a four-lane road linking Lhasa’s city and Gongkar Airport, and is expected to resume its services in six months.
Xinhua quoted Li Dingkun, leader of the construction team, as saying that about 95 percent of the expressway has been completed, and construction works are now being carried out in on a 389-meter tunnel in the mountains near Gongkar Airport.
He further said the tunnel would be completed by March, and the expressway is scheduled to be open by May 2011.
The Lhasa-Gongkar Expressway runs along the southern bank of the Lhasa River and would reportedly have a maximum speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour.
The 1.55 billion Yuan project is expected to ease traffic pressure along the Lhasa section of the No. 318 national highway that faces frequent flooding and traffic jams. (ANI)
