West Bengal CM concerned over soaring education costs

KOLKATA - West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has expressed concern over the high cost of education, as underprivileged can’t afford it.

Speaking at a function here on Monday, Bhattacharjee said his government would provide financial help to the poor to continue their studies.

“There is an environment in the country (related to cost of education). Those who can afford… can purchase the education. Those who do not have money, they can’t purchase it,” said Bhattacharjee.

He also said the aim of his government was to create a just society devoid of any prejudices.

“Our aim is to create a society in West Bengal devoid of caste and creed discrimination where boys and girls would get an equal opportunity,” he added.

According to reports, between 2003 and 2009 the number of children enrolled in elementary education in India increased by 57 million to 192 million.

The number of children who left school fell to 8.1 million from 25 million in the same period. (ANI)
