KUALA LUMPUR - The divorce rate in Malaysia is increasing, and one of the contributing factors has been put down to quickie marriages among young Muslim couples.
According to statistics, about 50 percent of registered marriages in the state of Sarawak ended up in divorce.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said the divorce rate among Muslims in big cities such as Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu has risen.
“The number of Muslim couples getting married is increasing every year. Unfortunately, the divorce rate is also going up,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.
“The major contribution to divorce in the state is that couples are getting married too early and too fast.
“Initially, they think they are compatible but after some time, they realise they are not. Then, they bid goodbye and divorce. Some of them even left their spouses and disappeared,” he stated. (ANI)
