DARJEELING - Babita Ganguly, one of the 30 accused in the Gorkha leader Madan Tamang murder case, was arrested here on Monday.

Ganguly, one of two members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s woman wing, was named in the chargesheet filed by Darjeeling police for the lynching of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League president.

Babita was arrested from her residence.

Another woman activist, Sani Sherpa, is still evading arrest.

So far nine persons named in the murder had been arrested. But prime accused Nickol Tamang fled from CID custody in Siliguri on August 21. He had been arrested in mid-August.

Meanwhile, Binay Tamang, Joint Secretary of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) said that Ganguly is being framed and many such innocent people are being framed by the police, under the pressure of West Bengal government.

“Some of the names of innocent persons are included in the FIR of Madan Tamang murder case. Babita Ganguly’s name is one of them. So the police have arrested people as per the names mentioned in the FIR. We are requesting the government saying that we don’t trust the investigation being carried out by the CID (Criminal Investigation Department),” said Binay Tamang.

Madan Tamang was killed on May 21 after being attacked by unknown miscreants during a rally in Darjeeling.

Tamang, a vocal opponent of the GJM, recently opposed the GJM’s stand on an interim set-up for Darjeeling Hills and demanded Gorkhaland instead. (ANI)
