West Bengal’s jute manufacturers spread awareness on use of natural fibres

KOLKATA - In a bid to save the environment, jute manufacturers in West Bengal spread awareness among the consumers on the use of natural fibres instead of plastic and synthetic substances, by creating the largest jute bags in India.

The huge jute bags were put on display in two shopping malls in Kolkata to catch the eyes of visitors.

The Managing Director of the jute bags producing company, Tarun Mullick, said consumers were regularly handed plastic bags in shopping malls, and the display tried to create awareness about eco-friendly jute.

Mullick also said both the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness Book of Records have shown interest in featuring these huge jute bags in their next editions..

“Initially we made this for people’s awareness. When we sent it to Limca Book of Records and Guinness Book, then Limca immediately accepted this is the world’s largest jute bag,” said Mullick.

The preparation of the bags took about a month with 25 workers working on each bag using natural dyes and pigments. Each bag costs about rupees 1,00,000.

Jute cases, folders, calendars, and water bottles are some of the things becoming popular among the customers.

“This thing that they are doing is a pretty good thing because in today’s date, we do not care about the world really, so someone has to take the initiative for that, so this is very good and a very good campaign. I truly appreciate this kind of awareness programme,” said Rick Chatterjee, a customer.
