NEW DELHI - President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday condoled the passing away of veteran freedom fighter Satyawati.

The mother of late Vice-President Krishan Kant, Satyavati, was the oldest freedom fighter in the country. She died at the age of 106 on Tuesday.

She was cremated at the Lodhi Crematorium on Wednesday afternoon.

In her condolence message, the President said in Smt. Satyawati’s death the country has lost an eminent personality.

“Smt. Satyawati was a freedom fighter, who actively participated in our freedom struggle. I fondly recall my meeting with her at her residence last year. In her death, the nation has lost an eminent personality and a great freedom fighter,” said President Patil in her condolence message.

In 1925, Satyavati married Lala Achint Ram, a Gandhian and one of the founders of Servants of the People Society.

After Independence, she and her husband moved to Jalandhar. In the 1950s, they both got drawn into the Bhoodan movement. Son Krishan Kant was elected to Parliament in 1967 and went on to become the Vice-President of India. (ANI)
