MUMBAI, INDIA(GaeaTimes.com)- The Indian origin Canadian writer Rohinton Mistry has expressed his reaction against the decision of Mumbai University to withdraw his award-winning and famous novel ‘Such A Long Journey’ from its syllabus. The University took the decision after protests from extremist religious outfit Shiv Sena that found the language used by him in the book objectionable. Rajan Welukar the vice-chancellor of the university took the step which provoked wide outrage from the readers and intellectual circles who slammed the partisan politics played by the outfit. The attitude shown by the university management has also come under fire. The author who was born in Mumbai and later immigrated to Canada continue to remain reclusive as is his nature.
However, author Rohinton Mistry has sent a statement in response to the action taken by the university. A letter sent by the author was read out at the Press Club of Mumbai by noted filmmaker Anand Patwardhan. However, he is yet to send the full response. The author has come down severely on the Shiv Sena for resorting to its muscle flexing tactics and the response of the VC of the university.
Rohinton Mistry has also expressed his happiness at the support he has got from the civil society. Sadly, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan has supported the stand taken by the University of Mumbai on this issue. He recently supported the decision taken by the VC of the University of Mumbai. The incident has raised huge outcry among the readers and fans of the author who have said such attacks on art and literature should not take place in civil society.
