DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- On Monday the Delhi Government gave its nod to the expansion of Delhi Metro at a cabinet meeting. The work for the third phase of Delhi Metro will start. The DMRC has proposed that the new phase of Delhi Metro will have six corridors. The corridors will require INR 21648 crore to be set up as it has been estimated. The transport department has been asked by the cabinet to make a detailed project report for 4 of the corridors. The cabinet of the Delhi government led by Sheila Dixit the CM of Delhi scanned the DMRC’s phase 3 proposal before giving the formal approval to it.

When it gets complete the third phase of Delhi Metro will add more than 69 km to the existing metro network in Delhi. 31 km of the upcoming phase will be elevated while 38 km will be underground. The transport department however has not recommended the Ashoka Park-Delhi Gate and Malviya Nagar-Kalindi Kunj corridors. Ever since its inception a few years back the Delhi Metro has expanded rapidly linking adjacent Gurgaon to the capital. It has taken the load off road transport system in the capital. The CWG has also resulted in the expansion of new routes along the network of DMRC.

The progress in expansion of Delhi Metro has often been stalled by snags and deficits in quality monitoring but the passenger load has only increased with time. The majority of the network of Delhi metro runs on elevated tracks as opposed to Kolkata metro which has most of its network underground.
