Delhi CM hands over 140 provisional Beghar, UIDAI cards to vulnerable persons

NEW DELHI - The Sheila Dikshit Government has moved one step closer to identifying vulnerable persons of society, by issuing “Beghar” (homeless) cards and provisional unique identification AADHAR document and numbers under the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
In a function jointly organized by Mission Convergence, Government of Delhi and UIDAI, Chief Minister Dikshit handed over provisional AADHAR cards to 40 poor persons and “Beghar” cards to 100 homeless persons at Apna Ghar Night Shelter of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board at Nizamuddin Dargah.
She also initiated enrolment of homeless persons for “Aadhaar” four days after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi presented “Aadhaar” identification numbers to tribals in Maharashtra.
Dikshit said unique identification numbers will be provided to “Beghar” cardholders in the next two to three weeks.
A street play was presented by a group of disabled and homeless persons on the occasion to highlight the issue and to generate awareness about the scheme.
Dikshit described it as a major step towards reaching the unreached in Delhi.
She said the enrolment for “Aadhaar” will be carried out during the night.
She described the handing over of provisional AADHAR cards as a beginning of a revolution which will serve as a permanent document of individual’s identity throughout the country and facilitate social entitlements.
The process was inaugurated today.
St. Stephen’s Hospital is the mother NGO for the homeless of community health department. It is functioning as the Chief Coordinating Unit for the survey.
Street residents putting up in the city for more than six months will be eligible for the “Beghar” card- a smart card that will also carry the UIDAI number subsequently.
The enrolment of every individual will take approximately 12 minutes.
State Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said that Mission Convergence has come a long way in bringing welfare schemes close to the vulnerable sections of the society.
He further stated that the Registrar for the UIDAI project in Delhi has began the process of digitizing data for what they term as the most vulnerable section of the society.
The survey for 35,000 homeless persons is going on under the supervision of St. Stephen’s Hospital, he said. By Rajesh Gaur(ANI)
