CHENNAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The commuters in Chennai had to face a harrowing time on Monday morning as a section of the city’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation decided to go on a strike in order to protest against a recent incident in which an altercation broke out between a bus driver and some autorickshaw operators. According to reports, the incident took place on Sunday which prompted the members of the city’s public transport system to go on a strike. Due to the agitation, large number of the MTC buses remained off the roads causing extensive difficulties to the usual commuters.
A spokesperson of the union of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s employees revealed to the media that Sunday’s incident took place owing to some kind of an enmity between the operators of autorickshaw and the bus crews which resulted in the fiasco. However, the union spokesperson emphasized that if the necessary steps are not taken to address the issue then the bus strike in Chennai would continue and it might take a graver shape as more employees are likely to join the protests in the coming days. It has been reported that members of the union which includes bus drivers and conductors from 11 depots across the city have stayed away from work pledging their support to the agitation.
According to sources, officials are negotiating with the workers who are on protests so that the bus strike ends and an amicable solution can be reached as soon as possible. Commuters in Chennai who were on their way to their offices on Monday morning had to face a tough time as they did not have any other option apart from availing train services or taking autos.
