Dogs passing out parade in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE - In a unique event, 21 dogs ‘graduated’ with an exclusive passing out parade after six months of training at the Coimbatore-based Police Dog Squad Training Centre in Tamil Nadu.

The training centre in Coimbatore provides training to various dogs used in deductive activities like crime, explosives, narcotics and similar illegal objects.

Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, Dr. C Sylender Babu, inspected the ‘passing out’ parade on Friday.

“We have a Dog Training Centre in Coimbatore. We keep ten dogs of our own. Apart from this, we have twenty dogs that are being trained here. These dogs are meant for various districts and various special units,” said Sylender Babu.

He gave away certificates of passing out and special dog food to the canines.

“We train three categories of police dogs, one is tracker which is meant for detecting a crime, and then we have sniffer dogs.

They find explosives. Now we have dogs for narcotics, which detect the existence of narcotics,” said Sylender Babu

“Various techniques are being taught to them to detect a particular object, for discipline and obeying the commands. And once they master all the tricks, they are sent back to the respective units,” he added.

He also said that after the training, the dogs are sent to Special Branch, Crime Investigation Department and Narcotics Control Board of Tamil Nadu Police as well as similar outfits elsewhere. By Jehovah G. (ANI)
