Israeli jurist on Gaza flotilla inquiry dies at 93

JERUSALEM — Shabtai Rosenne, an international jurist, diplomat and a member of the Israeli commission of inquiry into May’s deadly naval raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla, has died. He was 93.

The commission, headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Jacob Turkel, was set up to look into the May 31 raid that killed nine pro-Palestinian Turkish activists aboard the flotilla.

Turkel says Rosenne was among the foremost experts in international and marine law.

Rosenne was born in London and served in the British Royal Air Force before immigrating to Israel. He served a long line of diplomatic positions, including as legal adviser to Israel’s Foreign Ministry and as the country’s top representative to the United Nations.

Rosenne is to be buried Wednesday morning in Jerusalem.
