Madras Engineering Group’s cycle rally ends today

BANGALORE - A two weeklong cycle rally by adventure enthusiasts of Indian Army’s Madras Engineering Group (MEG) to mark the 230th anniversary of their regiment culminated at Karnataka’s Bangalore city on Friday.

The rally that was kicked off on September 4 witnessed the participation of around 400 cyclists, who covered four the States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the home to most of the MEG’s personnel.

The rallyists also encouraged the youth to become a part of the Madras Sappers’ family.

In the course their tour, the cyclists interacted with veterans and war widows and compiled ample data vis-’-vis their welfare and post-retirement benefits.

“They were out for period of two to three weeks. They halted at various places with the war widows, veterans of ours, any problems, which they had so those problems were highlighted at various Sainik Boards. Also it acted as a motivator for young kids to join Madras Sappers,” said Brigadier Gurudeep Singh, Commandant, Madras Engineer Group and Centre.

Madras Engineering Group known as the Madras Sappers draw their origin from the erstwhile Madras Presidency army of the British era.

Apart from being a live-wire organ of the Indian Army, the personnel of MEG have carved out a name in several other fields such as sports, rescue and salvage operations during natural calamities and allied humanitarian deeds. (ANI)
