Major Guinea vote postponed by at least 2 weeks
CONAKRY, Guinea — The head of communication for Guinea’s National Independent Electoral Commission says Sunday’s presidential runoff will be postponed by at least two weeks.
Thierno Ceydou Bayo says the commission is divided between members asking for two weeks and those asking for up to three weeks’ postponement of the Sept. 19 vote. Any delay is likely to heighten tension in the capital, where campaigning was temporarily suspended after violent clashes between supporters of rival political parties.
In order for the election to be suspended, the military general in charge of overseeing Guinea’s transition to civilian rule must issue a decree. Gen. Sekouba Konate has not yet issued the decree, but implied in televised comments the election could not be held Sunday.
