Incessant rains cause swelling up of rivers in north India

YAMUNANAGAR - Heavy downpour in hilly regions led to swelling up of rivers in north India on Monday.

The Water and Irrigation Department in Haryana has released more water from the barrage across River Yamuna and once again causing to high increase of water in the river.

Water is being released from Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district.

According to the officials, the inflow of water this barrage has increased considerably.

“750,000 cusecs water came into River Yamuna when it rained in Uttarakhand on September 08 and 09 and it was passed smoothly through Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat and Delhi. As it receded but today again due to incessant rains in the hilly region, around 257, 000 cusecs water is registered,” said S K Sharma, Senior Engineer, Yamuna Water Services, Karnal Division.

He added that due to rain the water level is increasing and it could reach three to 3.25 lakh cusecs.

S Bhardwaj, Hathnikund Barrage in-charge said that they don’t have provision of storing water into the barrage. Whatever inflow of water is received is passed through the floodgate.

“From 70 to 150 it is low flood, 125,000 thousand to 2.5 lakh it is medium flood after 2.5 lakh it is high flood,” said S Bhardwaj, Hathnikund Barrage in-charge.

Locals are facing problems as water has submerged fields and road links, alike.

Inclement weather prevailed over most parts of Haryana and neighbouring Punjab state, inundating several areas.

The monsoon this year has caused extensive floods in several parts of northern India like Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh bringing devastation to life and property. (ANI)
