NEW YORK - A new application called ‘You the Man’ aims at keeping boozy revellers from getting behind the wheel.

The city Transportation Department in USA is offering the application’s free download as part of a campaign to ensure road safety.

“People should have fun. But we have to be smarter and safer about how we do it. This gives people more options,” The New York Daily News quoted Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan as saying.

The application offers humour and hard facts to help determine if you’re a DWI-in-waiting. And even a bit of tongue-in-cheek advice on why mass transit is often the best option, “If I fall asleep, the worst thing that happens is I wind up in Coney Island, not jail.”

And on why a taxi is often the next best choice, “A $30 cab ride is $500 cheaper than a DWI.”

A spin-the-bottle game decides who the driver will be, and a calculator estimates blood-alcohol content. If above .08, which is legally drunk - the app provides the locations of nearby subway stops and phone numbers for the closest car services.

The app is available via iTunes, and the city is promoting the program with coasters in bars, at a dozen local colleges and at New York sporting events, Sadik-Khan said. (ANI)
