ALLAHABAD - Illicit liquor has claimed the lives of at least three people in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad District.
According to locals, the victims consumed the liquor brought from a local shop late on Tuesday evening.
The victims, and some other persons who consumed the liquor, were admitted to a local hospital exhibiting symptoms of exhaustion and nausea.
“He used to drink a little bit of alcohol, but earlier, nothing like this had happened. Tonight, he drank around 10 p.m., and after that there was sudden pain in his stomach followed by vomiting and diarrhoea. We took him to the doctors, but they could not do anything,” said Lalji, a relative of one of the victims.
The district administration swung into action and has suspended the police officials in charge of the area for negligence. A case has also been registered against three people, who, the officials say, are absconding.
“We were informed that these people have died after consuming alcohol. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. We have filed a complaint against four people and are trying to arrest them. The police post in charge of the area and three other constables have been suspended for negligence,” said Sanjay Prasad, District Magistrate of Allahabad.
Unconfirmed media reports say that at least six persons died. By Virendra Pathak (ANI)
