SURAT, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- With the memory of the devastating 2006 flood the residents of Surat are keeping close watch on weather forecasts by the met office. The prediction of heavy shower coupled with the release of huge amount of water from the Ukai Dam has made them worried. The estimates of the Indian Meteorological Department say that the Surat district will witness a rainfall of 11.5 inch on September 1. The inclement weather condition has made the people saddened. An official said that the situation is serious but no flood alert has been issued yet. The Surat Municipal Corporation is keeping a close watch on the water level in Ukai dam.
The outflow and inflow of water in the Ukai dam is also being monitored with caution. The authorities in Surat do not want a repetition of the 2006 fiasco when tow third of the district went under water released by the Ukai dam. It has been reported that more than 2 .60 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Ukai dam on both Sunday and Monday. The water level in the dam shot up following heavy rainfall in neighboring Maharashtra. The water level is at 333.54 feet while the danger level is marked at 345 feet.
The officials of Ukai Dam were forced to release water in the last few days to keep the rule level. Several regions in the state are expected to get moderate to heavy rainfall. The administration has taken necessary measures to tackle a floodlike situation. The rainfall can lead to the creation of such a development.
